On a summer morning
I sat down
on a hillside
to think about God—
a worthy pastime.
Near me, I saw
a single cricket;
it was moving the grains of the hillside
this way and that way.
How great was its energy,
how humble its effort.
Let us hope
it will always be like this,
each of us going on
in our inexplicable ways
building the universe.

Love the idea of a poetic pause! Mary Oliver’s “Wild Geese” is one of my favorites. Now “Song of the Builders” is too. 🙂
Hola:
Que lindo poema. Yo tengo algunos en Español, y me gustaría saber si deben estar en Inglés. Qué bien encontrar a personas hoy, con esta sensibilidad y que podamos compartirla.
Un saludo,
Wallis
Beautiful poem! When I feel like having a poetic pause from work I come to howmatters and inhale the beauty of the poems that you share with us! Thank you!
